Thermos-Cooked Cereal

A long time ago, I loved my cheerios, for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack. A big bowl of plain cheerios with milk was delightful. One day, on my road to food awareness, I read the lable and learned that my beloved cheerios were a processed food. I humbly gave them up and went searching for a cheerio alternative… the search ended when I found this recipe: not quite cheerios, but easy and delicious (I use buckwheat, chopped dried figs and a drip of maple syrup).


• 3 Tbls Whole Grains – rye berries, barley, wheatberries, corn, millet, brown rice, buckwheat or
steelcut oats*.
• 1 cup hot Water (more for thinner cereal)
• Natural Sweetner, such as raw honey or maple syrup (optional)
• Fresh or dried fruit, again this is optional
• A wide mouth thermos

*Note: You can use just one type of grain or you can be creative and use several grains.

How to:
• Give the whole grains a whirl in a (coffee) grinder or blender; several seconds is fine.
• Add the whirled grains to the thermos
• Bring water to a boil
• Add water to the thermos
• Add fruit to the thermos
• Mix thoroughly, and close thermos
• Let sit overnight

In the morning the grains will be tender and softly sweeten by the fruit. Add in your sweetener of choice and enjoy.

This is a great recipe for those that don’t have time to prepare breakfast in the morning. Bring to work and enjoy at your desk with your morning coffee. This is delicious, easy and super nutritious.
